Shopping guide to the souks of Marrakech, Morocco

The souks, or outdoor markets, of Marrakech are the largest in Morocco, and one of the most fascinating places in the world to buy. Filled with carpets, bronze objects, antiques, spices and leather, the souks are absolutely essential to any wish list.

Orientation
The souks are organized by the items sold, and each receives its name for a specific type of product that can be found there. They are open every day from 09:00. at 9 pm, and we recommend visiting them in the morning or in the evening to avoid the scorching heat of midday.

It is easy to get lost in the winding streets of the old city, because they are badly marked. The locals are trying to be helpful for the most part, but some unscrupulous « guides » may try to disorient you further so that they can take a tip to take you back to the main square, Jemaa el Fna.

In case of loss, ask a dealer for advice. They have less motivation to leave your store and more incentives to guide you in the right direction.

Or, alternatively, before leaving, ask your accommodation if you can hire a guide. They are extremely cheap by American standards. UU And they will make sure you do not get lost or be fooled. It’s worth it!

Souk Semmarine is probably the first souk you will find entering the labyrinth, framed by a large iron trellis and full of memories oriented to tourism.

Souk de Bijouters is the jeweler’s souk, marked by a sign that says Bijouterie Tegmoutiene.

Souk Cherratin specializes in leather goods, including traditional Moroccan slippers, handbags, belts, wallets, wallets and everything in leather. The Smata souk is the main area to find slippers, also known as the shoe souk. Souk Btana is another with animal products, full of freshly processed sheep skin.

The souk Chouari is the main souk of carpentry, mainly with products in cedar wood odorant. Souk Haddadine is the souk of the blacksmith, with craftsmen who sound loudly. The Boilermakers’ Souk is the souk of the Boilermakers. Souk Kimakhine is where the Moroccan instruments and Gnaoua are sold.

The Dyers’ Souk is not necessarily the best souk for shopping, but it has the historic center of death, where wool and fabrics can be dried along the streets.

tanneries
The tanneries are in the northeastern corner of the souks, so be sure to get a guide if you plan on going there, as well as make sure you wear shoes that you do not mind getting dirty a little . It’s an incredible experience, but it’s an active tannery, full of animal skins and fats all over the ground.

Your nose will tell you when you approach the tanneries, and the owners will offer you fresh mint so that you can breathe by walking in the tanning tanks.

Overall craft market
This craft market is a good option if you feel intimidated by trading and still want a job. The prices are set maybe 35% more than what you would pay in the souk after trading, but the products are of very high quality.

Negotiation

As a general rule, always be ready to negotiate. The culture of negotiation dates back thousands of years: continue!

Merchants will always give you a ridiculous first offer and expect you to close it. Try to target 25% -30% of your first offer. Never offer a price that you are not willing to pay, it’s bad manners!

For services such as guides and taxis, try to agree on a price in advance and stick to it. Taxis in particular will often try to check the price at the destination, so just pay and leave.
